Sometimes you don't know how to help your child with homework, and you ask yourself, why does a kindergarten student need to do homework. Here you will find some tips and infomation that will help you with your child's homework and more.
Kindergarten is a crucial year where your child will learn the foundation of his/her education, as well as good study habits for the future. Also, homework has been created for them to review what is learned at school and keep the knowledge fresh.
Before starting homework, set a specifc space at home for homework, where you will have the supplies necessary for it (pencil, crayons, scissors and glue, keep it in a ziplock bag or pencil box). Make sure that you have enough light in this area. Work with pencil always, unless other specified. Your child will be able to erase if he/she makes a mistake and do not feel frustrated. Before telling him or her what to do, read the instructions and ask your child what he/she understood. This help them to think and comprehend instructions. If your child makes a mistake don't tell him/her that is wrong, after they finished ask them to check their work, go over the instructions with him/her. If they realize they made a mistake guide them to find the correct answer.
Activities you can do at home or in the car
Sometimes your child wants your attention all the time, but you are busy taking care of the house or you are driving. Here are some tips that will help you to provide that attention and get some assistant with the house chores. 1. Ask them to help you sort the laundry (before and after). Sorting helps them to learn how to classify objects with a common attribute. 2. Sort the silverwear after dinner or when cleanning out the dishwasher. 3. Set the table. If you are using forks and knives ask them what is the pattern in it. They put a fork and then a knife what will come next on the next place mat? 4. Fix their shoes: pair them up or sort them by kind or color(velcro, laces, slide in, for summer, for winter, for the beach, for church, etc.) 5. In the car play beginning sounds, reading environmental print (store signs) or rhyming when passing by a store, for example Wal-mart ask them what is the name of the store, what is the beginning sound on the word Wal-mart, can you rhyme the name? 6. In the car play I spy a letter: it could be letters on a sign, a store name, a street name, etc.
